Breasts....get em' away...make it stop

-Another one of my opinions on the taboo of breasts

I recently read a few articles on Netscape explaining how a few mothers felt that breastfeeding was "offensive and disgusting". When "Babytalk" magazine posted a baby on a mother's breast for the cover many women said they ripped it out of the magazine and many others said they threw it away or turned it face down because they were appalled by the image.

The American Diatetic Association claims that 72 percent of people find it inappropriate to breast feed in public. I know I discuss many issues surrounding the female body and sex, and I wouldn't say that we should all deliberately display our body parts for no reason or deliberately breast feed in public, but if we decided that we wanted to, why would that be such a problem? Is it not just a natural process in life? Of course, only in our society would a boob be "disgusting and offensive". I would understand if it was an erotic type photo that had some extremely sexually charged energy to it, but the picture is an innocent depiction of a natural part of life. Its just a little funny that everyone is so uncomfortable with the idea of a child feeding….so why is it that they are so uncomfortable?

….Because a breast is involved. Oh my gosh…..breasts…get em' away, make it stop.

It's not often that you see women breast-feeding in public in the UK, but when they do they're always discreet and hardly flaunting their nipples all over the place. Clearly this is a natural thing, to feed your child. Some people just need to get over themselves.

As much as it pains me to admit it, boobies are not just for fun!

I saw the headline and thought, "Nah, I won't go there. I am not interested in a breast story. But, then, I thought, "Oh, what the heck, it is early morning and news is slow, no one is reading my latest article, I might as well see what the story is about."

Well, it was about just what I thought it might be. About breast feeding. Then it occurred to me how strange I should be attracted to this article after watching that movie last night. It was a Robert Redford movie entitled, "an unfinished life." I think. Anyway, there were several scenes where Redford was milking a cow. I immediately noticed he was milking from the wrong side. Cows are traditionally milked (around here anyway) from their right side. The first time they shot that scene was bad enough but when they did it again I got upset. Why would a pro like Redford do things backwards? Why spoil a perfectly good movie with such an error?

Later in the movie Redford's granddaughter milked the cow and she did it from the proper side, made me feel a lot better. Whew, now I feel better about a lot of things. So glad I came to read this article. Thanks Kristine Mirelle for posting it. Now I won't have to worry about that movie any longer, got it off my chest. Oh, my, what a phrase.

Great seed. In my opinion, the picture is beautiful. Although I wonder if that breast is a stunt double, or has been heavily altered. In my experience, lactating breasts do not look "magazine cover ready".

I really do think the cover is beautiful. There is nothing gross or perverse about a mother nourishing her child. As for someone being offended and disgusted...get over it.

Lets see , where to begin.. I think that generally speaking, America has a twisted view of sex. Because breasts are associated with sex..they are taboo. Its sort of a paradox. Sex is good as long as we don't talk about it, or paractice abstinance only sex ed with our kids. Sex is good, but only as long as you are married. Sex is good , but only as long as you are heterosexual. My wife breastfed both of our children. She carried a shawl with her, wore convenient clothing and barely ever raised a fuss from anyone. On the other hand, I have heard , even form younger women(20's) that they think it is disgusting. I don't get it, but than again.. I was a hippie when I was a lad.

Sex is good, but only as long as you're buying things.

come on now, lips and tongues are used for sex at least as much as breasts. Why such a taboo.

That said, i have no problem with women that want to breastfeed their child in public. I do think they should be discreet about it but I have not met mothers that are not discrete on this subject so it is not a big issue for me either.

I always have the option to look away so it is not offensive in the least.

Let's force all breast feeding mothers to wear Burkas big enough to carry their baby within and be done with it.

I was breastfeeding my infant (now toddler) all last year and do recall some snide remarks. In one of these instances I was eating at a restaurant with my sister who reacted to the snide comment by loudly indicating that if my baby wasn't allowed to eat in public then they shouldn't be allowed to eat in public either. It was awesome.

People just don't get it. Yes, I would be offended if a lady was hanging her breats out in public for all to see just for the sake of hanging them out (Not that I wouldn't look mind you). No, I am not offended when someone is breast feeding thir child in public. Get a life people.

Oh, I see. I am beginning to understand the significance of his user name.

High schools have dress codes to combat that weird impulse for hormonal teenagers to rip each other's clothes off. I dunno if these two issues really relate.

Ironically, most of the same Americans that are appalled at the requirement by some Muslims that women cover their face in public (or even wear burkas) are steadfast in their requirement that a woman cannot bare here breasts in public, even in situations where it is ok for a man to do so.

The same basic arguments for covering up women are used in both cultures: as indicated above, they revolve around sexual taboos and fears. In both cultures, men have used this rule as a way to control "their" women. And in both cultures, women have bought into the practice and deny any unfairness when compared to men's freedom in this regard.

I think breast feeding is one of the most beautifu (non erotic) motherly activities. It is truly a selfless act and all mothers that breastfeed are soldiers in my opinion. As far as doing it in public, people that make it out to be inappropriate should re-examine what is happening. It is a Mother feeding her baby, for Zeus's sake. Medically it is the best food a new baby can get and if some Men have inappropriate thoughts well then that is their problem and they should seek help. Context is so important, especially in this case.

When my daughter was born, I breastfed. I had no intention of doing it in public, so I pumped. That was my saving grace, if I didn't pump, I had an emergency can of formula. The reason why I didn't do it in public, is because of the perverts. People will gawk at you, but that is our society. I just did not feel comfortable exposing myself in front of other people. My body is something personal. Breastfeeding is an intimate experiance shared with your child, but flaunting is one thing that I could never do.

I can't imagine I would even notice if a woman breast fed in public. Actually, I can't tell you the last time I saw a woman breastfeed in public which means I am certain I wouldn't notice if a woman breastfed in public.

Yet I am also certain I would notice those same breasts if she were in a nurse's outfit holding a lollipop. So I guess it's all about perspective.

Yes, many issues in the West are issues in name only--conceptual or abstract scenarios that really have little bearing on the average life.

If I ever do notice a woman breastfeeding a baby (whether in public or not), I will try to repress any memory of it. I wouldn't ever want anyone to be "appalled" by my memories or thoughts.

Not being sarcastic. You'd be surprised at how much I have to suppress, living in America.
